A byte truth table puzzle designed to teach basic concepts of Boolean Algebra as applied to computer science through touch. Setup problems by arranging bits (zeros and ones) on the table and choose an operator chip. Great for teaching Boolean Algebra and its applications in Computer Science.

A document is included with the truth table that briefly reviews the basics of Boolean Algebra and its application in computer science. It contains sample problems and learning objectives for each problem type.

The truth table and all chips are made of high quality 3-ply baltic birch plywood. The truth table is approx. 11.4 in x 5.75 in (29 x 14.5 cm) in size and about 1/4" (6 mm) thick. A total of 27 double sided pieces are included with the truth table.

The operator chips come double sided and include the following choices. These choices are the standard symbols used for the operators in C/C++ and many other programming languages.

  • & (ampersand) - AND
  • | (oem pipe) - OR
  • ^ (caret) - XOR
  • ~ (tilde) - Ones Complement
  • >> (x2 greater than) - Right Shift
  • << (x2 less than) - Left Shift

The truth table also includes 24 chips engraved with a 1 (true) on one side and a 0 (false) on the other side.

If you are looking for a smaller and cheaper computer science oriented truth table, consider our nibble (4 bit) truth table.

The table and all pieces are suitable for use in their unfinished state but may also be finished. They may be painted, stained, and/or varnished without trouble. Some finish sanding may be required if you desire a very smooth surface.

When cutting wood with a laser, wooden edges are noticeably darker than the top and bottom. The darkening is fairly uniform and some people prefer the contrast. However, if you do not like the darker edges, they may be removed by sanding.
