A wooden analog clock designed for teaching time recognition. The clock hands are independently moveable to represent different times. Each hand is stiff enough to stay where placed but not difficult for a child to move. The clock is a great manipulative for a classroom setting, homeschooling, or tutoring.
Perfect for teaching a child how to read time. Great for teaching skip counting by 5s to determine minutes hand position. Also great for teaching terms such as half past, quarter til, etc.
We found it best to visit the clock several times with a child. Initially before a child knows addition, it can be used to introduce the hours and the basic components of an analog. After learning addition and skip counting, another session is useful to practice reading the actual time. Then again during fractions to associate terms such as half past, quarter til, 10 til, etc.
Each clock will fit comfortably in 2 hands and has a pleasant weight. They are laser cut from high quality 1/8" (3 mm) thick 3-ply birch plywood. The dimensions are 5.8 inches (14.7 cm) in diameter and 3/8 inches (10 mm) tall. The hands are held in place by a coated aluminum Chicago screw.
The clock is suitable for use in its unfinished state but may also be finished. It may be painted, stained, and/or varnished without trouble. Some finish sanding will be required if you desire a very smooth surface. Since we secure the Chicago screw with lock tight, you can contact us for an unassembled one to ease finishing.
When cutting wood with a laser, wooden edges are noticeably darker than the top and bottom. The darkening is fairly uniform and some people prefer the contrast. However, if you do not like the darker edges, they may be removed by sanding.
